Late Night Woman's Hour
Late Night Woman's Hour
Overview
The Late Night Woman's Hour is a programme on BBC Radio 4 which is broadcasted every Thursday and Friday at night around 11pm and is the late night edition of the main programme 'Woman's Hour'. The programme first ran in 2015 and is currently being broadcasted. The radio podcast was a success after its first episode where the hosts talked about dating which found many people interested.
Format
The radio programmes are broadcasted in a podcast format. They are streamed on the radio station and are available for download on the BBC Radio website. It may seem that they decided to go for a podcast format because it is the most suitable for the programme as it only involves the hosts talking to each other and therefore it is not necessary for there to be any visual and relies on the listeners to focus on the audio. These podcasts are available to download from the website and listen on any device that supports audio.
Topics and target audience
The topics covered in the podcast tend to be aimed at women around the age of 25 and older. The topics covered on the podcasts contrast between subjects which are serious and relatable to their age whilst other podcast episodes tend to be about entertainment and are aimed at a younger audience. Examples of serious topics include 'Money', 'Not Wanting Children' and 'Funerals'. Examples of less serious topics aimed at a younger adult audience include 'RuPaul's Drag Race', 'Girl Crush' and 'Parties'. Also with the fact that this is a late night broadcast, it is likely they chose to broadcast the episodes at night when children are likely to be asleep. The first episode caught the attention of many adult women when the hosts discussed about dating which is a topic frequently brought up by women. They seem to be open to all racial groups but focus on the middle class audience since it fits in with Radio 4's target audience in general.
Presenters and podcast
The show is hosted by Emma Barnett and was previously hosted by Jane Garvey and Lauren Laverne. Jane Harvey is a radio presenter, Lauren Laverne is a radio DJ and was known as a singer before and Emma Barnett is a journalist and presenter. The hosts of the programme are middle class females who are around the age of their late thirties which fits in with the target audience and this may be why they can relate to the topics discussed.
They have guests that feature on the podcast and they share their views with each other on the topic and some agree with each other whilst others disagree. The podcast is basic and lasts around 20 minutes long. Since Radio 4 is aimed at seniors of around the age of 50, this radio programme stands out and is shown at night directed for a much younger audience.
