BBC Sounds
Radio 1 seems to play mostly mainstream music which are generally recent releases. The music genres differ from Pop to Rhythm and Blues, and even Rap. Radio 1 does not only play music all day as it also includes speech and talking segments which may be done to attract listeners to not only the songs but to the talking segments. This radio station seems to engage with young listeners with its target audience being from the ages of 15 to 29. It focuses on modern popular music in the UK as well as America.
Radio 3 focuses on the genres of classical, opera, jazz and world music. The radio station also shows live performances of orchestras and singers. The target audience is around the age of 65 and has slightly more female listeners than male. Similarly to Radio 1, they also have talk segments which feature mostly adult/ worldly related topics compared to Radio 1 focusing on modern, trendy topics.
Radio 4 is very different to Radio 1 and 3 as this radio station plays almost only speech segments and music is played infrequently. The talks include analysis of news, current affairs and factual programmes. The target audience focuses on seniors and around the age of 56 and older.
Podcasts
A podcast is a digital audio file which is available online to download to your device. They are normally available as a series of episodes and when a listener subscribes to the podcast they will receive the latest episodes. Podcasts have audio-only playback and so the listener just listens to the podcast which lasts around an hour. Podcasts are normally interviews between the interviewer who typically runs the podcast and the other person being on the episode. However they are not only interviews as they can be deep discussions on topics such as business and lifestyle. Podcasts can be found on platforms such as iTunes or Spotify which also allow the listener to subscribe to them.
Broadcasting
Commercial radio broadcasting are when radio and television programs are broadcasted by a privately owned media group. It was America's first form of radio in the 1920s which then spread to worldwide later on. Public broadcasting includes media from radio, television and other electronics. Public broadcasting in many countries is funded by the government. Commercial broadcasting involves radio and television advertisements which are for profit which is different to public broadcasting which gets subsidies from government and does not have paid advertising interrupting the show.
BBC
The BBC is a public service broadcaster for the UK. The BBC aims to serve the public, by educating and entertaining them. They provide news, learning, television content and radio broadcasting services to the people of the UK. They believe that it reflects the culture and values to the UK. They have ten television channels along with ten radio stations which are nationally available. A subsidiary of the BBC is the BBC Worldwide which serves internationally and BBC Americas is shown in USA.
