Production: Producer Research
BBC 3
About - BBC 3 is a British channel which is operated by the BBC. The channel launched in February of 2003 with the aim of attracting a target audience of 16-34 year olds with a mixed-genre of British shows. It also encourages innovation through exploiting its content on digital platforms such as the internet, mobile devices and interactive television. It is believed that this is meant to give the audience more control on how they access and interact with content.
Shows and content - The majority of the programmes shown are comedy-drama as popular shows include 'Gavin & Stacey' and 'Little Britain' which consists of the comedy-drama genre. The channel also broadcasts American shows such as 'American Dad!' and 'Family Guy'. The series 'Torchwood' which is a science-fiction drama had 2.4 million viewers in 2006. It seems as if comedy-drama is the preferred genre from the target audience. Other programmes include documentaries, news and sports.
Relating to my production - I am not quite sure yet as to what my television sequence will be based off, but I would place it along the genres of either comedy-drama or crime. Comedy-drama seems to captivate the target audience as with the high viewing numbers of shows of that genre. However with several crime shows such as 'Accused: A Mother on Trial', 'Spooks' and 'Murdered by My Boyfriend', it pushes me to think that fictional crime shows could intrigue a young audience.
E4
About - E4 is a British channel which is operated by Channel 4. The channel first launched in 2001 which had to be subscribed to, however in 2004 it became free-to-air. The letter 'E' in the name stands for 'entertainment' and the channel is aimed at 16-34 year olds. Unlike BBC 3 which is broadcasts mainly British channels E4 shows programmes from America and Australia as well as British shows.
Shows and content - Most of the shows on are American which include: 'The Big Bang Theory', 'Friends', 'How I Met Your Mother' and many more popular American shows. The top two most viewed shows on the channel are 'The Inbetweeners' and 'The Big Bang Theory'. The target audience suggested from the Channel 4 website is for '15 and over' where an exact range is not given. Though programmes such as 'The Inbetweeners' have strong language and adult jokes, it does seem like it is targeted towards a 'young-adult' age group spanning from ages 16 - 25. Most of the other shows are family-friendly with no strong language. Most of the shows are comedy therefore targeted towards a young audience who will find the comedy in the shows funny.
Relating to my production - E4 offers a great number of American shows which intrigues both American and British audiences. Most American shows are highly rated even in the UK where shows such as 'The Big Bang Theory' pull in an average of 2 million viewers. This statistic is useful to know as it forms the idea that the E4 audience enjoy comedy rather than drama. 'Friends' is also a famous television series which may be what I want my audio-visual television sequence to include similar features to it.
To conclude, I can see from my research that BBC 3 is focused on the comedy-drama genre although in my opinion, lacks to captivate viewers with a low viewing numbers even on popular shows of the channel. E4 has a much higher viewing audience and the shows which are broadcasted on the channel could be similar to my project. Certain elements of the shows broadcasted on E4 could help give me an idea of what would fit in with the rest of the shows. Going for a comedy sequence could mean including pauses between dialogues for the audience to laugh or to include laugh tracks which are seen in E4 shows such as 'The Big Bang Theory' and 'Friends'. I have decided that E4 suits my production project the best due to the show genres, audience and project ideas.
